Summer Programs

Summer of 2022

Katie Wakana Tutoring is offering various virtual literacy summer programs for rising kindergarten thru fifth graders looking for an extra summer boost while school is out of session.

Summer is a valuable time for children to develop skills outside the school setting. Make sure your child doesn’t fall into a summer slide and instead builds upon skills taught throughout the school year. Continued summer practice is critical for students to retain knowledge and skills learned in the previous school year.

These sessions will help maintain and grow your child’s literacy skills while having fun in a small group setting.

  • Are you interested in adventure, building reading skills, and connecting with others? Then, join one of our book clubs!

    Goals of the book club:

-practice reading (in both group and individual setting)

-build comprehension skills through conversation and writing

    -practice organization and responsibility

    -have fun and build confidence!

The goal of the book club is to practice reading (both in a group and individual setting), build comprehension skills through conversation and writing, practice organization and responsibility, and have fun! We will be reading one or two books over the four week timeframe.

This is a great way to encourage reading and discussion while on break from school! The best part is that the virtual format allows you to keep reading and join even while on vacation!

Materials will be delivered to you one week prior to class. There will be some assigned reading outside of class time (we’ll create a schedule so that the responsibility is for the reader not caretakers!). Once we have a full class, I’ll send a survey to vote on our book.

    Session 1:

    Rising second and third graders: Wednesdays 4:30-5:30 (4 weeks: 6/29, 7/6, 7/13, 7/20)

    Rising fourth and fifth graders: Thursdays 4:30-5:30 (4 weeks: 6/30, 7/7, 7/14, 7/21)

    Session 2:

    Rising second and third graders: Wednesdays 4:30-5:30 (4 weeks: 8/3, 8/10, 8/17, 8/24)

    Rising fourth and fifth graders: Thursdays 4:30-5:30 (4 weeks: 8/4, 8/11, 8/18, 8/25)

  • Join our “Back to School” preparedness course to help transition from relaxed, summer fun to more structured learning in a small group setting. Sessions will include thirty minutes of reading and writing every day based in Orton-Gillingham practice.

Reading practice will include phonemic awareness, decoding, encoding (spelling), fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Writing practice will include practice with brainstorming, organization, and comprehension.

Both will be taught through the executive function lenses, adding in extra organization, working memory, and flexible thinking practice.

A perfect way to wrap up summer and get ready for the school year!
